Near the end of 2014, we got knowledge about the huge crime-rate of South Africa. This beautiful country has lots to offer, but also has a downside. Over 17.000 people are murdered each year. Most of them are caused by gang-violence.
To get a better view of the situation, we flew to Cape Town to speak with youngsters about their experience with gangs. We contacted several organizations, for instance, the Ubuntu Academy and Young In Prison, and got the opportunity to speak with youngsters about their indirectly experience with gangs. We even spoke with ex-gangsters.
After a while, we realized that most kids in Cape Town are not aware of their future prospects. Therefor, kids are more likely to join gangs. Some kids are only the age of 10 when they get their first contact with a gang! Gangs can offer them a life of status and wealth, but what do they have to give in return?
So it’s important to show these children the possibilities that they have and how they can create a better future for themselves. With our varying professions combined and lots of co-creation with the people we met during our time in Cape Town, we created a board game called The Sky Is The Limit. We even tested the game, the first sketched prototype version, with kids of the Kwamfundo Primary School in Khayelitsha, a bad neighborhood in Cape Town.
